Red, White, and Bourbon Poke Cake

This patriotic layer cake gets a boozy twist with a sinfully tasty bourbon glaze and bourbon frosting. Decorated to the hilt with fun red, white, and blue sprinkles to match the red, white, and blue layers.

Serves 6-8

Ingredients: For the cake

Ingredients: For the bourbon glaze

Ingredients: For the bourbon frosting

Instructions:

  1. Prepare cake mix according to box instructions. Separate the cake batter evenly to 3 bowls. Tint one bowl with red food coloring, and the other with blue (keep the third white). Follow the baking instructions, and let cakes rest on a rack for 1 hour.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together bourbon glaze ingredients until smooth. Poke holes in each cake, and pour the glaze over top. Place cakes, uncovered, in the refrigerator for 1 hour before decorating.
  3. In a large bowl or electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, whisk together bourbon frosting ingredients until smooth.
  4. Layer cakes with bourbon frosting before stacking (blue, white, then red), and then frost the top and sides. Decorate cake with red, white, and blue sprinkles, and pipe extra frosting on top or sides (optional).

Tip: You can also use store-bought frosting (3 containers will frost and decorate the cake). Just stir 1 tablespoon of bourbon into each container before frosting the cake.
