With pumpkin-spice lattes back in season and autumn in the air, it’s time to change your home decor to fall. But you don’t have to bring in orange and other bright autumn hues to get a cozy seasonal look. Instead, you can use natural elements and colors to achieve those fall vibes, but with a cozier, laid-back style—just follow these tips.

Rustic hues

This season, the trend is to focus on decor in fall colors, but more subtle ones. For instance, think of how autumn leaves look after they have fallen to the ground, with their vibrant shades softening into warm browns, faded rust hues, terracotta-oranges, mustard yellows, and soft crimson reds. In the kitchen, you could bring these muted colors in by placing a rustic wood cutting board with some fresh apples on your counter, by putting out some copper measuring cups, spoons, and canisters, or by decorating your kitchen table with a plaid table runner in soft browns. Layering decorative pillows and throws in muted fall colors on your bed and sofa are other beautiful ways to introduce autumn hues into your home.

Bring the outdoors in

Decorating with colorful leaves and florals is a natural and inexpensive way to bring fall into your home. You could pick some autumn wildflowers or sprigs of leaves and fill vases with them, or stick them in grapevine wreaths to accent a wall or door. Of course, you could still use vivid orange pumpkins in your decor, but instead opt to spray-paint them a creamy white or coppery brown for a more subtle look.

Think vintage

Nature gets a little rougher around the edges in the fall as leaves crack and fade, and hydrangea blooms dry and brown, but these changes can still be lovely. You can create this autumn aesthetic in your home with vintage items. Check out your local thrift store for items like Turkish rugs, amber-tinted glassware, woven baskets, dried flowers and wreaths. If you are lucky, you might be able to find some thrifted rattan or wicker furniture, too.  You could also craft faux vintage decor by picking up inexpensive replicas at a dollar store and adding some ribbon, paint, or fabric.

Metals and glass

Metal and glass accents in various colors can contribute to your new fall look. Glass pumpkins, candle holders, and other glass decor are on trend this year. One way to get the look is by updating inexpensive decorative glass items with glass spray paint in amber, green, or yellow. Meanwhile, metals in black, brass, and copper can lend depth and bling to your space. Try hanging photos in metal frames to create a collage wall, or by placing dramatic metal candelabras on your mantel or coffee table.

Add some light

Finally, as the days get shorter, you could add a bit of coziness with some candles or twinkling fairy lights. Fairy lights come in fun fall shapes and colors, such as brown and amber acorns and orange pumpkins. You could place some battery-operated fairy lights in a frosted vase for some drama or string lights across your fireplace mantel to light up your living room or family room.
