The holiday season is fast approaching, which means festive gatherings, cozy nights in, and brilliant decorations are right around the corner.

But before you deck the halls, take some time to declutter your home so you can ensure that you begin with a fresh, organized space. Here are some practical and stress-free tips to help you clear out the mess and feel fully prepared for the hustle and bustle ahead.

Take it step-by-step

Decluttering doesn’t have to happen all at once. Instead, make a game plan for tackling it piecemeal, including a list of all the rooms that need organizing and a schedule for giving it done over a few weeks. For instance, you could aim to spend an hour a day cleaning out the closets one week, the living room the next, and so on (depending, of course, on how much effort is needed for each. By breaking down the process into manageable tasks, you can make it feel less overwhelming and help yourself stay motivated to get the job done.

Clear off surfaces

Holiday décor shines best when it’s not competing with piles of mail, magazines, and other miscellaneous items on your countertops and tables. Clear everything off these surfaces except for items like lamps, and consider paring down your accent pieces and knickknacks, if only for the next few months. This will create an open, welcoming feel and leave room for festive decorations.

Donate or toss unused items

In anticipation of getting more stuff through gifts, now is a great time to evaluate your items to determine if there are any you no longer need. Clothes that don’t fit anymore, old decor that’s been stashed away for years, and kitchen gadgets collecting dust are only taking up space at this point, so sort through them and decide what to donate, toss, or keep. Just make sure to verify the donation center’s rules or your municipality’s waste and recycling regulations to make sure you’re decluttering responsibly.

Maximize your storage

Once you’ve pared down your belongings, organize what remains by utilizing storage bins, shelves, and hooks. This is especially helpful for seasonal items like winter coats, scarves, and boots, which tend to pile up during the colder months. Keeping everything organized and tucked away will give your home a clean, streamlined look that will enhance your enjoyment of it and leave a positive impression on guests.

Make space for visitors

If you’re hosting during the holidays, make sure to your home is primed to receive visitors in every area. Clear out some closet space, and set aside drawers for their belongings in the guest bedroom and bathroom. Having designated spots for their personal items will make them feel welcome and give your home an uncluttered, tidy feel they can relax in.

By taking the time to declutter now, you can create a serene and organized environment, setting the stage for a stress-free and enjoyable holiday season. Plus, who doesn’t love starting the new year with a clean slate? Happy decluttering!
