Weather can be unpredictable. Though we can’t completely avoid weather conditions, there are precautionary measures we can take try and protect our homes the best we can from damage it may cause.

Northwest and Northeast

Severe winter storms are extremely common in this region, so it’s important during the fall to take precautionary measures by inspecting your roof for any damage ahead of time. This includes looking for leaks, checking to see if you need new shingles, and for any other damage you might pick up on. If you own a snow blower, see if it’s in good condition, that way you don’t find out it no longer works when you’re already snowed in. Make sure you are stocked up on salt, shovels, and snow attire prior to the first snowfall of the year.

West

In areas like California, the warm weather can become overbearing and dangerous where even cooling off at a beach or pool isn’t an option. To help cool down your home in these extreme conditions, try installing awnings and blinds that can help protect your home from getting too much direct sunlight.

With this extreme heat come the constant fear of wildfires. By cleaning out gutters from dry debris, covering vents with metal wire to prevent any embers from entering your home, as well as windows, you can help prevent serious damage.

South and Southwest

States like Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma are all very prone to tornadoes. Make sure items that can go airborne (e.g. patio furniture, playsets, gardening tools) are secured to the ground, or put away in the event of a storm. Keep tree branches trimmed back from windows and your home’s roofline.

Midwest

If you are in an area especially effected by floods, you can get above the problem by building up. Raise your home and any electrical outlets. Flooding begins at ground level, and if your home and electric starts there, it will certainly get damaged by the water. Building up gives your home and electric a fighting chance.

Southeast

Hurricanes are a prominent issue in the Southeastern area of the United States. The unpredictability of hurricanes can cause flooding, fires, and more, so you have to prepare for the worst. Installing impact resistant glass or shutters may help stabilize your home for the intense wind and rain. Install strong garage doors that will be able to withstand extreme wind, that way it won’t expose the rest of the structure of your home.
