Innovative Ways to Add Instant Curb Appeal

Curb Appeal | By Lauren Kim | 18 Likes

There is truth to the saying “You never get a second chance to make a first impression”—and the same philosophy applies to your home. Whether you are in the market to sell your house or are just looking for a refresh, taking some time to master your home’s curb appeal can go a long way.

In fact, most real estate experts agree that some simple landscaping and cleaning can have a big impact on the perceived value of your home. And, even if you’re not selling, everyone loves when their house looks great!

These curb appeal tips—perfect for a Saturday afternoon DIY—are sure to increase the charm of your home.

1. Refresh the Front Door

If you haven’t paid much attention to your door lately, consider adding a fresh coat of paint. And don’t be afraid of a bright pop of color—just remember that the color should complement the overall feel and color scheme of your home’s existing exterior.

2. Go Green

Adding plants and flowers can be a great, easy way to add pops of color to the exterior of your home. Consider a variety of flowers in coordinating colors, or pick up ready-made arrangements for a quick fix. Utilizing window boxes is another easy way to add some color and greenery to the front of your home.

3. Update Hardware

Modern hardware—whether on your front door, garage, or mailbox—can help bring your home into the twenty-first century. Take a trip to the local hardware store, and look for pieces that are clean and modern, such as copper or matte black. Just make sure all of the finishes match.

4. Upgrade House Numbers

Choose house numbers with a contemporary look in a finish that matches your other exterior hardware, such as your door handle and light fixtures. Also keep size in mind; the numbers should be clearly visible from the street but shouldn’t overwhelm other elements of your exterior.

5. Out with the Old

Replacing or painting your old, worn-out mailbox can make a tremendous difference to your home’s curb appeal. Also, pay close attention to the base, and consider adding some flowers for a finishing touch.

6. Deep Clean

Don’t underestimate the importance of pressure-washing your home’s siding, pathways, and deck. Windows and gutters should also be well maintained. These simple acts of maintenance will not only keep your home cleaner but also drastically improve
its appearance.

7. Create Symmetry

Symmetry is visually appealing to the eyes as well as one of the easiest and fastest ways to add instant curb appeal to your home. Take a step back, and make sure any adornments on the front of your home (e.g., sconces and planters) are symmetrically balanced.
