How to Create an Outdoor Office Space
If you work from home, you might want an outdoor office space where you can work and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. Even a simple outdoor area on a balcony, deck, patio, or in your yard can provide a productive and comfortable place to work.
Add a work surface and chair.
If you use a laptop, you’ll need a surface to put it on and a comfortable chair to sit on. A small bistro set with a table and chair could serve your needs. Even just an outdoor folding chair or an Adirondack chair and an inexpensive laptop desk could work. A laptop desk with a mouse pad, a device ledge for a laptop or tablet, and a slot for your mobile device can be especially handy.
Boost the Wi-Fi.
If you have a strong signal, you might have no trouble connecting to your home’s Wi-Fi from your outdoor work area. However, if you can’t get a good connection, you can try strengthening it with a Wifi extender or mesh network.
Get power.
You will need a power source for your laptop and other devices. If you have an outdoor electrical outlet, you can use an outdoor surge protector power strip with several outlets and USB ports to power your electronics. A portable battery pack can charge your devices if you don’t have access to an outdoor outlet.
Make it cozy.
Place a soft cushion and lumbar support pillow on your chair to add comfort. You might also want a soft blanket for chilly weather, or a small fan for when it’s hot. An outdoor rug can add style and softness underfoot.
Minimize distractions.
Background noise, such as from your neighbors or nearby traffic, can hinder your concentration. Lessen these distractions with noise-canceling headphones or a white-noise machine. If your outdoor space lacks privacy, add a few potted plants or perhaps a planter with a trellis to support climbing vines or hanging flower baskets.
Provide sun protection.
Direct sunlight can create glare on your computer screen, making it difficult to read. Too much sun can also overheat your device. A shady spot is best for your laptop, can keep you cool, and protect you from the sun’s rays. Be sure to wear sunscreen, and try to work outside early mornings or in the evening for extra protection. A sun shade sail or a tilt umbrella with an umbrella base can provide a break from the sun. Wearing sunglasses and a hat with SPF 50+ protection are other protective options.
Set up lighting.
Artificial lighting can add ambiance and allow you to work outside for longer. You can hang string lights—these solar-powered ones are a good option. Hanging a solar lantern can also bring more light to your space.
Transport your items
You might need something to help you carry your laptop, mobile device, beverage, and other items to your outdoor space. A padded laptop bag will protect your computer while moving it, while a lidded insulated tumbler will keep your drinks contained and cool.
